My Dreadlock Journey – How Love Locs Was Born

My first dreadlocks were born in 2016. It started with just one, then a few more, and eventually a full row. By the time I was backpacking through Asia in 2017, my dreadlocks were in desperate need of maintenance. Determined to care for them, I set off to the local market in Kampot, Cambodia, in search of a crochet hook—only to come back empty-handed. Luckily, I had better luck the next day, securing the tool I needed to begin my dreadlock maintenance journey.

With guidance from my loctician and YouTube tutorials, my partner at the time helped restore my hair. The messy knots and tangled sections at the back of my head were transformed—and I couldn’t have been happier! Inspired by this experience, I soon began dreadlocking my partner’s hair, a process that took me three weeks across three different countries.

Returning to Australia, I started dreadlocking my friends' hair, and soon after, I decided to fully dreadlock my own hair. Over several months, I completed the transformation row by row, integrating 22" human hair extensions to achieve the long hair I had dreamed of since I was 13. Each step of the process deepened my self-love and confidence, helping me let go of insecurities and embrace my authentic self.

This journey of self-acceptance and transformation became the inspiration behind Love Locs AU. I created this space to help others experience the same empowerment, confidence, and self-expression through natural dreadlocks and braiding.

With years of experience, countless hours of practice, and continuous learning, I have refined a gentle, effective dreadlocking method. My approach protects the scalp, maintains as much length as possible, and minimizes shrinkage. The secret? Palm rolling and stretching during the maturing process, ensuring healthy, well-formed dreadlocks that stand the test of time.

Whether you’re beginning your dreadlock journey, looking for maintenance, or dreaming of long, beautiful dreadlocks, I’m here to guide and support you every step of the way.
